How to add a featured image

What is a featured image?

A featured image is the image that you choose to display with a specific page title when it is referenced in different places on the intranet. The first image you upload to a page will automatically be selected as the featured image for that page. If you do not upload any images to a page, it will not have a featured image. You can choose a different image to be the featured image for the page, or remove the featured image altogether.

A featured image must be uploaded to the page it is connected with, but it does not have to display in the page's contents in order to be the featured image. Web images cannot be selected as the featured image.

Where do featured images display?

  • Homepage news in grid layout
  • Homepage news carousel
  • Homepage news in directory layout (news on the left)
  • Search results
  • Pages in grid layout

Two versions of each featured image

Since the featured image shows in various different areas on the intranet, there are two versions of each featured image - landscape and square - that will display in different contexts. Once you choose a featured image, you can crop and select what part of the image will show in each featured image version.

Add a featured image to pages and news posts

The first image that you upload to a page in the "Insert Images" dialog will automatically be chosen as the featured image. (To learn how to upload an image, see how to insert images.) If you want to change the featured image, see the heading "Change the featured image" below. Note that for news posts in list layout, the featured image will be cropped according to configuration settings applied by the intranet administrator, not by the featured image crop.

If no images have been uploaded to the page, do the following:
  1. Go into edit mode, click on "Featured Image" on the right to expand that section.
  2. Click "Add image". A dialog will appear.
  3. Click "Browse" and upload an image. (To learn how to upload an image, see how to insert images).
  4. Once the image has uploaded, you are automatically switched to the "Images" tab of the dialog. Select the checkbox (technically it's a circle) in the top right of the image.
  5. Click the "Close" button.

Featured image layouts and cropping

Two different versions of the featured image exist for display in different places on the intranet. You can select the zoom and crop of the featured image for each of the versions. Once the featured image has been chosen, it displays in the featured image area on the right below the Publish/Save button. There is a tab for each of the image versions - landscape and square.
  • Landscape: Used for news grid layout, news carousels and pages using the grid layout.
  • Square: Used for search results and homepage news items when in directory layout.
The minimum recommended size for featured images that will display in landscape version is 800 pixels x 300 pixels.
The minimum recommended size for featured images that will display in square version is 512 pixels x 512 pixels.

Change the zoom or crop of the featured image

  1. In edit mode, on the right side under "Featured image", click on the tab for the featured image version name that you want to crop. (If you don't see the featured image, click on "Featured image" to expand the section.)
  2. Click on the image to open the "Position" dialog. You can edit both versions of the image in this dialog.
  3. To change the zoom level on the image, hover over the image so a bar appears at the bottom. Click the plus sign in the bar to zoom in on the image, and the minus sign to zoom out of the image. (You can also zoom in and out of the image using the scroll wheel on your mouse.)
  4. To change the crop of the image, hover over it so your cursor becomes a "move" cursor (crossed arrows), click and drag the image to crop to the part that you want.
  5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for the other version of the featured image.
  6. Click the "Done" button. When you are done editing the page, click "Save".

Change the featured image

In edit mode, click "Replace" below the current featured image that shows on the right - the Featured Image dialog will appear. If you haven't yet uploaded the image that you want to be the featured image, do so under the "Upload Image" tab. In the "Images" tab of the Insert Images dialog, hover over the image you want, and select the checkbox (technically it's a circle) in the top right of the image to select it as the Featured Image. Click "Close".

If the desired image has already been inserted on the page, you can select it as the featured image in another way: In edit mode, hover over that image and click the pencil in the top right of the image. Select "Set as featured image". The featured image will automatically update at the top of the page.

Remove the featured image

In edit mode, on the right side under "Featured image", click "Remove" below the featured image. (If you don't see the featured image, click on "Featured image" to expand the section.)

If the featured image you want to remove has been inserted on the page, removing it as the featured image will not remove it from the page. To learn how to remove and delete images from a page, see the Insert Images page.
